The patient was an 11-year-old boy who arrived at the Rady Children’s Hospital trauma center after being attacked by the family’s pit bull puppy. The doctor was an oral and maxillofacial surgeon with a private practice in Carmel Valley. From 2 a.m. until 7 a.m., the doctor worked to put the boy’s face back together again, because that is what he does. He did it for free because that is who he is.
